What sort of back problem are you dealing with?

Not all back problems are equal

Some low back problems do require medical attention. Very occasionally, symptoms can indicate a more serious problem that needs investigation or specialist medical care.

Much more commonly, the problem isn't medically serious, but it isn't settling on its own. Pain may be persistent, keep returning, or be getting in the way of work, exercise, sleep or everyday life. In those circumstances, a proper assessment and treatment plan may be worthwhile.

But there is another group too. Some back problems can be managed perfectly reasonably without ongoing hands-on treatment or regular visits to a clinic. Sometimes what you need most is a good assessment, reassurance about what you're experiencing, and some sensible advice about movement, exercise and self-management.

How do you know which advice actually applies to you?

The hard part is knowing where you fit

Searching your symptoms online can produce everything from reassuring explanations to frightening diagnoses. And because back pain is so common, friends, family and colleagues often have their own experiences and advice to offer too.

You can, of course, book an appointment with someone and see what they think. But that involves time and expense - and when you're choosing a practitioner from a website or Google search, it isn't always easy to know beforehand whether their approach will be useful for you.

Finding the right care can sometimes feel like trial and error.

“That’s why we developed our Low Back Check — to help you work out what to do next.”

So, what is our Low Back Check and how does it work?

It’s a brief online questionnaire followed by a one-to-one phone consultation with one of our physiotherapists, who will personally discuss your situation with you and help you decide what to do next.
